059- Use It Up...

... Wear it out... Make it do... Or do without!

I learned that fun little poem years ago from my friend Nancy Lenker. I've always liked it since it typified how I was raised.

Last weekend a DS called and asked if I could repair some of his jeans prior to him going out of town. (Funny aside his brother had been here a few days before with a *new* pair of jeans that were all patched and frayed looking! I told him MY patch work wouldn't show like that! LOL)

He arrived with the two pair he wanted patched and then what he termed a pair of *sacrificial jeans*. I experienced more than a little bit of anxiety because he wanted me to use white thread and go for the look his brother had. (I normally use a thread that matches the pants and you don't notice the patched area.) He was delighted with the results and took off early the next morning with 2 stylin' pair of jeans!

But then I just had this pair of now-sacrificed jeans that kept calling to me... you know what I mean? So last night in a fit of creativity I attacked what was left of them and made-it-up-as-I-went. I dug into my fabric stash and pulled out some fabric (green, of course) that was left over from making Camille some throw pillows, my old embroidery thread roll (that I inherited from my Mom... I just love the memories attached to it) and a lime green zipper that I've had around for I-don't-know-how-long... (but the price was 40 cents, so that should give you some idea) and a different black zipper. By bed time I had the purse all finished except for the embroidery. The funny part is that I spent as much time this morning adding the embroidery as I did last night constructing the purse.

058- Cloud Shadows

One of my favorite things is to watch the cloud shadows scuttle across the landscape. I was able to catch this photo of one of *my* mountains right at the end or our cul-de-sac. Such a beautiful sight. (I ran a Lomo Action to make the colors really pop!)

057- Pussy-willow

Oh Spring, lovely spring! I'll tell you that spring is my favorite season (but when it gets to be summer, fall or winter... I will tell you the same thing! Funny girl!) I suppose what I love is the changing seasons... I am always ready to see the longer/shorter days or cooler/warmer temperatures. I love the constant ebb and flow of nature.

This time of year I watch for those subtle changes that announce that spring is near and I am delighted when I find them... and disappointed when I find out that the flash of pink isn't a hyacinth but just a plant-pot-poker left over from last year :o(

I actually think that this sweet, fuzzy, soft little bud was on an aspen and not a willow, but all of these fuzzy-buds will always be pussy-willows to me.

056- Sunsets

I am such a sucker for sunsets! I just love them. When we lived in Palmdale we got many wonderful multi-hued sunsets. We don't get as many here in Springville, but I love them anyway. Sadly some of them can't be captured with a camera. I read that a camera doesn't *see* as much light variation as the human eye.

055- So Soon?

When I posted yesterday and stated that Spring is Coming I didn't expect to wake up today and find out that it had arrived!!

I looked at my thermometer about 11am and it said 59, WHAT??? I know that this is an accurate thermometer as it lives in the shade on the north side of my house. After soaking my aching back in a hot bath I harnessed up the doggies (ok, only one dog... and I only put on a collar and leash!) I took the most wonderful spring day walk. When I arrived home this is what I found on my trusty thermometer! I could hardly believe my eyes.

Now I'm not so naive as to think that spring truly is here for good... BUT... WOW... I will take a day like this anytime! We may get more snow and it may last... but to have a day like this in February in Springville... that's heaven!

The other big news is I spent all day yesterday cleaning and organizing my workroom. Boy, what a mess and what a job. I realized that I'd neglected this for way too long when I was looking for something under my table and the dust bunnies attacked me (foul-tempered-rodent!). I still need to take everything out of my closet and adjust the shelves so I can fit my two big purple paper totes in there. Then I'll only have the big red scrapper that lives under my cutting table.

054- Spring is Coming!

I am enjoying my Project 365 so much! I love the opportunity to create and journal something everyday. It is a very positive thing for me. AND I've learned a very important lesson as I've been on this journey- make hay while the sun shines! Yeah, I know that isn't a new idea but it really applies here and particularly this time of year. We will have lots of those wonderful grey days in a row; and while I love these kinds of days, they aren't so photogenic. So I make use of the beautiful days with glorious light to stock up on wonderful photos.

When I arrived home on Friday I glanced at my flower bed and could see these little shoots coming out of the ground. Yea, spring is on its way! In the fall I planted 50 daffodil bulbs (which, by the way, are deer-proof). I can hardly wait to see all of their happy little faces.

052- Bird Bath

Yesterday afternoon I did something I never do... I went to the drive up teller at the bank (I normally get out of the car and go to the ATM inside the lobby). As I sat waiting for the teller to cash my check I noticed this whole flock of starlings and one lone sparrow in a puddle having the most wonderful time! There was water flying everywhere! I could tell they were thoroughly enjoying themselves.

It was that wonderful afternoon light that illuminates everything; all the drops of water glistened and looked so happy. By the time I got finished at the bank and slowly drove a little closer so I could get photos most of them had finished their bath. (Yes, I know I need that dSLR with a zoom lens... but not now.)

What funny birdies...

051- Basking

The last few weeks we've had more temperate days- you know, days in the high 40s! Now if I was still in Palmdale I would think that these were freezy-weezy-days, but I live in Utah now and appreciate these warmer days. Even though we've had several snow storms that have left several inches of snow each, the warmer temperatures have melted most of it (except my glaciers [say *glA-cee-ers*] down at the bottom of the driveway!)

I've noticed these beautiful rose leaves that have hung on during this long cold winter and thought they were so beautiful. Today on my way up to the Temple I had my trusty camera and finally got the macro shot I wanted of them. I just love the way they look like they are basking in the sun. It makes me want to pull out a chaise lounge and go lie out in the sun... but, maybe not yet... maybe I wait until it gets at least into the 50s!

050- Bernie

Bernard Caraway Lewis would be 12 years old today. That seems so hard to believe. How could that many years have gone by?

My first interaction with Bernie was sometime in the early 1990s. I dreamed that we were at an airport with a beautiful outdoor concourse complete with fountains and gardens. Gordon had gone on ahead and the kids and I were catching up. I walked down some stairs and could see Gordon talking to this stranger, a young man- missionary age. I walked up behind them, and being considerably shorter than both of them, I looked between their arms. This young man was showing Gordon a piece of paper; I looked and could see that it wasn’t an airline ticket as I had expected but a birth certificate. The young man pointed to a line and said, “I am supposed to be your son, you need to let me come!”

Photobucket

I am a firm believer in dreams. I know that the Lord uses them to allow us to communicate with our loved ones on the other side of the veil. I’ve been visited by Mom, Daddy, Tony and Amanda on different occasions and for different purposes. So to have this information come to me in a dream wasn’t unusual.

Even though I was “older” we knew we needed to “let Bernie come” and waited for him to do so. We waited for what seemed like a long time, during which I periodically felt his presence reassuring me that he hadn’t forgotten.

Finally I got pregnant in the late spring of 1996. Pregnancy is ALWAYS hard on me and at almost 44 this one was even harder. But I was elated nonetheless that this little boy that we’d waited for was finally going to come!

My pregnancy progressed normally. When we went in for a doctor’s appointment at about 9 weeks we could see and hear his little heart beating. Not too long after that I felt him moving (I always felt life early, usually 10-13 weeks and with Amanda you could see my belly move at 16 weeks). I knew that our little man was on his way. But then at 13 weeks I started to feel better, and that was not normal for me. I am always sick for the full 9 months. We went in for another doctor’s appointment on August 13, 1996 and there was no heartbeat. Bernie was gone. That was all the time he needed here.

In the next few years Bernie continued to visit me. But now it was always in Mom’s little house in Greenville. In the dreams I’d gone to visit and there was Bernie; plump, blonde and healthy. My first thought was always, “I forgot about my baby!” But then the Spirit reassured me that he was being well taken care of and waiting for me.

Through other events I was led to know that his birthday would have been February 19, 1997. Each year I think about him as his birthday time draws near, but this year is particularly tender because he would be turning twelve (like his nephew Tadhg) and receiving the Aaronic Priesthood.

Once again I am called upon to bear strong testimony that I know that the Lord has given us a wonderful plan of happiness. I know that the Church of Jesus Christ has been restored to the earth with all of it rights, keys and powers. I know that my family is eternally linked together and this separation is just a short one. Soon we will all be together again. What a glorious plan!

Happy Birthday, Bernie. I love you- Mamma

049- Oquirrh Mountain Temple

I just seemed fitting to save this photo of the new Oquirrh Mountain Temple for a Wednesday, my temple day.

This temple is beautifully situated on the foothills of the South Salt Lake Valley just off Bangerter Hwy. You can see all the way to Mt Nebo to the south (which the entire length or Utah County) and well beyond Ensign Peak to the north. But the view to the east is the one that inspires me; within easy view I can see the Jordon River and Draper Temples. What a wonderful testimony to the faithfulness of the saints.

I hope you all have a beautiful day, I will!

048- March of the Ents

As many of you know I love to read; but perhaps even more, I love to be read to (well, maybe it's a toss up). I love the classics or what I will refer to as the new classics (Harry Potter is one, but sorry, no classic rating for the Twilight series). I have the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and the Harry Potter books on CD and have listened to them numerous times. These volumes are comfortable old friends that keep me company when I am busy with my hands, but my mind isn't occupied.

One of the first times I was driving my friend DeLoris I noticed that we have Ents marching up Maple Mountain. They aren't so noticeable in the summer, but in the winter they stand out clearly.

The last time I listened to the Lord of the Rings one passage jumped out at me. It is Treebeard, the Ent, speaking of the evil wizard Saruman.

"... his face, as I remember it-- I have not seen it for many a day-- became like windows in a stone wall: windows with shutters inside." [The Two Towers; Book III, p. 76]

I've reflected on that quote since I jotted it down last fall. I've reflected on how our countenance displays who we are and who we represent. Do we see His image in our countenance? Does the Light of Christ shine in our eyes?

I am reminded of a story I heard that is attributed to Abraham Lincoln (who we all know was not a good looking man). Someone was encouraging him to choose a man for his staff and Mr. Lincoln said, "I don't like his face." The other man questioned him on that; how can you not like a man for the way their face looks? The answer was simple; by the time you get to be the age of the man in question you are responsible for how your face looks.

Again, windows in a stone wall: windows with shutters inside or the Light of Christ in our eyes... always our choice.

200th Blog Post - 20 Random Facts

20 Random Facts about Me...

...that you probably don't really want to know anyway ;)

My niece, Sarah, was the first one to throw down this gauntlet on her blog (hers was 20 Random facts), then I got tagged by several people on Facebook (their lists were 25). So I decided that it would be a dandy subject for my 200th blog post. It just seemed fitting to me to do the 20 facts, being 10% of the 200. (You like the way my warped little mind works?)

The instructions are-

“Once you've been tagged, you are supposed to write a note with 20/25 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you. At the end, choose 20/25 people to be tagged. You have to tag the person who tagged you. If I tagged you, it's because I want to know more about you.” (Just keep telling yourself that! LOL). But I will add… only do this if it makes you happy, if it stresses you out, then bag it!

1. Today, February 16th is my half-birthday… a very merry un-birthday to me! TO ME? It was always a big deal to me when I was a kid… oh, wait, it’s still a big deal!

2. I am a 3rd generation Californian. Three of my grandsons ( Caden, Brock & Riley) are 5th generation Californians.

3. I am the baby in my family (that explains volumes, I’m sure). My family made me feel like I was the best thing that ever happened to our family so… "Everybody loves little Joanie, why wouldn't they?"

4. I eat fish eyes. (Mostly because I know it grosses people out, not because they taste good, they don’t taste like much of anything.)

5. I am an out-going person by nature, but the older I get the more cautious/reserved I become. (It is better to remain silent and thought a fool than open one’s mouth and remove all doubt!)

6. I NEED to have things organized. I like to have my fabric folded in a certain way and sorted by color; that also applies to scrapbook paper and clothing minus the folding part. (But if you looked in my workroom right now you might now believe that!)

7. I love the snow; I have since I was a child. One year, as a teenager, I put a bumper sticker on my mom’s truck that said, *Think Snow*… People still hold that against me.

8. I love nature. I had the privilege of growing up in a rural area where I could explore at will. I don’t get it when I see people walking/hiking/biking with their headphones on, don’t they know all the wonderful sounds they are missing?

9. I am like a child and show my excitement for things by clapping my hands and doing a happy dance. I get enjoyment out of the small things in life.

10. I don’t seem to be able to separate fiction from reality at the movies. (Years ago we went to see the Rocky 2 movie where Hulk Hogan is doing back-breakers on Rocky. I grabbed Gordon’s arm and said, “Gordon, Gordon! Why doesn’t somebody stop him!” He laughed and replied, “Joanie! Calm down, it’s just a movie!”) Thus I am very selective in what I can watch! ;)

11. I love my family with something nigh unto fierceness! They all know that I have my faults, but they also know that I love them to my very core.

12. I have a quirky sense of humor. Sometimes I will do or say something and then wonder- where did that come from? (And just for Auntie P here is some photographic proof)

Photobucket

13. I love to quote lines from movies, mostly Disney-type or romantic comedy (see #10). My kids have caught on and we have a whole repertoire of insane quotes. Sometimes this backfires; like the time I gave a lady a [clean] tissue and told her it was “mostly clean” and she looked at it like it was a contaminated!

14. I also have a whole list of words that I’ve picked up over the years that are mispronounced. Most of these are referred to as Helen-isms, but some we have invented. I realize that unless someone knows me they probably think I am just as funny as we thought Helen was! IE- frabric, low man on the tottin’ pole, rotiserairy, ban-bain, hoosed [a multi-purpose word invented by Caden that means anything that sounds similar to hoosed like; loosed, used], and Christian’s saying, “I just can’t like that!”

15. I have lived in 21 different houses (14 of which were in the short span of 10 years, yipes!), in 11 different towns, in 5 different states (California, Virginia, Idaho, Oregon and Utah). The longest place I’ve lived was Palmdale (3 houses, 23 years) and the shortest was 2 months (Doug’s basement while we shopped for our present house). The house I lived in the longest was the house where I was born and raised - 18 years.

16. I am uncoordinated when it comes to sports; there was a reason why I was always chosen last for playground games.

17. I love to sew. I started taking 4-H sewing lessons when I was 8-years old. Mary Greiner always had something absolutely disgustingly-smelling thing cooking and was so picky and meticulous I wanted to scream. But now I thank her from the bottom of my heart for teaching me the right way to sew (not for the disgustingly-smelling things!) My mom was also an excellent seamstress, but she had the good sense to have someone else teach me and then she let me “do my thing”. I would come home from school and think, “I want something new to wear tomorrow”. So I would dig into the material drawer, pull out fabric and a pattern and make it after school and wear it the next day. It took me years to get over that NEED to complete a project in one sitting once I had children! ;)

18. I also love to scrapbook. Pauline infected me. Last year I learned to do digital scrap and I love it even more than paper scrapping. This way I never use up my delicious paper.

19. Speaking of delicious as it applies to fabric and paper; when I see a color that is just so yummy I want to lick it! Strange, but there you are!

20. I love to read AND I love repetition. I can read/listen to a book many times and not get tired of it. The same thing applies to movies; I’ve watched some movies dozens of times and never get tired of it. It is like an old friend, come for another visit.

047 Snow Frog

Every winter we are treated to a wonderful array of snow sculptures by our neighbor down by the Stake Center (@ 4th S & Canyon Rd). I've stopped several times to thank him for his wonderful creations. I am so excited to see what he will make next. This winter we've had the characters from Madagascar, Thomas the Train, a 12' round birthday cake and now Mr. Froggy.

I drove past the day he was working on Alex the lion and there, in the snow, was a little plastic character that he was using as his model. Luckily my friend Debra got photos of that! I always manage to drive past when they have been snowed on again or they are in various states of melting.

But I caught this little guy (yeah, you can see how *little* he is compared to the mail box) with only a small skiff of snow.

046 Winter Sky

I just love the look of a winter sky; it has so many faces. Some days it is clear and bright, others grey and lowering (I refer to these as my wonderful-grey-days!), and then there is this sky, which may be my favorite- it looks like a quilt batting has been spread across the sky.

044/365

So... do you ever have one of those days when you just wake up cranky? I did today; our stupid little dog decided he was going to be restless last night and tromp all over the bed demanding to get in bed with me, instead of where he belongs on Gordon's side of the bed (he just runs too hot for me; I wake up roasting). I always can tell when I am sleep deprived because everything looks so bleak. OK rant over, that has nothing to do with today's post except to say that I still have a choice how to spend my day even when I'm tired and cranky!

I finished Sandie's *wedding ensemble* today! Whew, and yippee! I didn't want to be last minute, I don't like to work that way. Since I won't be able to get a photo of her in it for several more days (maybe even waiting until the wedding day on 3-6-9, how cool is that!) Anyway I got creative with a POTD for today. I spent at least an hour just monkeying around with the layers, papers, shadows, scalloped mat, etc. So here it is... brown and green... it doesn't get much better than that!

Just as I was finishing the dress photo I looked out my window (and what did I see???) but two of our darling neighborhood boys creeping around the edges of Lake Lewis. Finally one of them does *the stomp*! AHHHHhhhh... I grabbed my camera, ran downstairs and hollering,

"Don't move! Wait for me!" (I'm sure they think I am going to do... I don't know what?)

Cute little brother says, "I'm in a hurry to go to a birthday party."

"That's OK", says I. "Let me put my camera on burst... OK STOMP!!!"

Then I had to come in and call Mama and explain that those wet sneakers and pants... yeah, that's my fault! ;) I love to watch boys being boys!

043 The Storms of Life

I've been forced to examine the storms of life in the last few days. The good news is that these storms aren't hitting me directly, but it is also difficult to watch that ominous storm front descend on a loved one.

043 storm
FONTS- Problem Secretary, CK Cursive, BRUSH- KPertiet_LedgerGrids-9, (A2D)_Lomo Action

This has caused me reflect, yet again, on how we weather these storms. Choice, we always have that wonderful opportunity of choice. Do we choose to remain strong and faithful, built upon that sure Rock and Foundation, even Jesus Christ, or do we crumble and get washed away with the sands as did the Foolish Man?

I am so grateful that the Lord, in his tender mercies, has taught me to remain strong and immovable, built upon His Rock so that when the sun comes out (and it always does) I will be found on the other side, in the sunshine, somewhat weathered, but still standing. It is my fervent prayer that my friends, my loved ones, will be blessed by those same tender mercies and they will be anchored during their storms.

(You know who you are and that I love and pray for you daily!)

042 Black Swan

I found these beauties when I was out and about on my serendipitous photo explore on Monday. I didn't know there were black swans! A quick Google search uncovered some interesting facts. They were first described by botanist John Latham in 1790. Prior to that time the term *black swan* was used to denote something that probably didn't exist.

Photobucket
FONTS- Problem Secretary, CK Cursive, BRUSH- KPertiet_LedgerGrids-9, CoffeeShop Vivid Action, CoffeeShop Grunge Frame BRUSHES- My love hearts

What's more I didn't know there was a somewhat negative connotation to the term Black Swan Theory. And a book by the same name.

But enough of all that... I spotted these beautiful cobs (male swans) swimming in a little pond right next door to the Three Little Pigs!

Photobucket

And I'm not kidding... the piggies were so cute; one all black, one mostly pink and one pink and black but none of them were trying to build houses of straw, sticks or brick ;) So sad, I had to shoot through this ugly fence!

With some inspiration from my sweet niece, Cindy's Rosehaven Cottage Blog, I got a little creative with some brushes. What caught my eye when I was taking this photo what how the cobs neck and its reflection made a heart shape. Yes, serendipity!

041 Detour...

... there's a muddy road ahead... You all know that song, don't you?

That is the story of my Walmart run for the next 10 months! (How rude!) 4th South (aka SR-77) has been the object of disrepair almost since we moved here. First it was a new water line, then more auxiliary or secondary water lines that they found to be failing when they put in the new water line. Now it is a project to a) widen 4th South from Main St to 1700 West (Walmart's street) to 5 lanes and add two new bridges, both of which "fly-over" the local railroad tracks. The powers-that-be decided that the best way to do this was to close 4th South so that the project could be completed in 11 months as opposed to 18 months if they had to accommodate traffic. Did they consult me to see if this would be an imposition? No, not them!

I've been anxious to document this challenge to navigating east-west in my little town and I got it before winter returned. I got the idea to do a composite photo from the tutorial I did last week of Ethan. I'm very pleased with the way it turned out. I creates visually the feeling I have every time I have to detour to get to the freeway/Walmart. I discovered that changing the color of the background makes all the difference in the look of the sign layer (blending mode- difference). What fun.

Today I was on a quest for photo-ops... and boy did I hit the jackpot of serendipitous shots!

But today's offering is West Mountain... you know the one? Yeah, the one that's been missing for the last couple of weeks due to the inversion layer. As I left our little tract I could see all the way across the valley and it looked like I could almost reach out and touch it. 037 Sprinkles

(If you normally read my blog in a reader you may need to go to my blog to see the photos today. For some reason they aren't showing up on the reader... sorry)
This morning I was talking on the phone with my sister watching the rain from my workroom window. I have this little lake [you've heard of Lake Louise? well, this one is Lake Lewis ;)]. I love to watch the raindrops hit my little lake and create their concentric circles.

I threw on my coat over my pj's, still on the phone, and went out to the middle of the street to squat down and get *just that right shot*. [do you suppose anyone saw me? do I care? apparently not!]

Then I tried out a defogging technique by Noel Culbertson... oh my,did it every make a wonderful difference! I love the way it pulled out the details (thus, getting rid of the fog!) I am always so heartened by the generosity of so many talented people who freely share their talents with the rest of us. You know... there really are LOTS of good people out there! I am so thankful that I know that!

This is the view from my workroom window... have I mentioned before how much I love it?

036 Snow, Beautiful Snow

Perhaps the *true* idea behind a picture of the day is that you take a photo everyday, but when I have so many beautiful photos of the snow I just can't ignore them... so today the choice was a photo of the Cinemark Marquee and this beautiful snow-scape from 9 days ago. For me it was a no-brainer! So I hope you enjoy this photo as much as I do!

035 Catch-Up

You may ask, "How am I playing catch-up if I'm not behind?"

The answer is this... a long time ago... way last year (OK, so only 5 weeks ago) when I was doing my POTD one of my goals was to have a photo of each of our family members. It wasn't until I sent out my New Year's letter that DD wrote and told me that I'd forgotten Ryan and Nikki [sorry guys, didn't mean to ;)]. Ryan and Nikki live up in Saratoga Springs and are busy so we don't get to see them too often, but we love it when they call up and tell us they are coming on down to see us. So when they arrived a couple of days ago I hardly let them get in the door before I told them I needed a photo!

Since they were standing in front of our entry closet door I knew I wanted to pretty it up some. As I looked at all the fun overlays I've collected this one by my niece, Cindy, just jumped out at me. I played with the blending mode [multiply on the roses. I also added granite-soft light 64% opacity] Wow, doesn't it look like springtime! I love this effect! Thank you so much Cindy for these beautiful overlays.

034 Guess What I'm Doing?

A friend of mine is getting next month and I offered to do some sewing for her. I love to be able to do this for people. She decided she didn't want a fancy wedding dress (her mom says it's a costume... I loved that!); she will be getting a new temple dress for the marriage and sealing at the Manti Temple.

So I am making what I refer to as her "wedding ensemble". Her colors are brown, green and cream- YUMMY! The calf-length dress is the brown and the knee-length coat is the yummy green faux suede! I spread it all out on my wonderful 9 foot kitchen counter to cut it all out last Friday. (Gordon asked, "What would you do if you didn't have this counter?" My sad answer was crawl around on the floor! I used to do that all the time. But, boy, is it hard on my back now!)

Today I started the sewing... with a couple of fittings I should be finished in a couple of weeks.

033 Happy [Birdie] Home

I'm running into a problem with my project 365. I'm only on Day 033 but I've already taken nearly a year's worth of photos! (LOL) Some of them are so good I just can't let them slip through the cracks. I love this happy little bird house that resides down the street from me.

032 Ice Swan

This is one of the benefits of our church doubling as a reception hall. This is a left-over ice sculpture from a wedding reception. What a wonderful idea for a winter wedding!
